Maha Shivaratri: 'The Night of Shiva'

Description

Maha Shivaratri is an annual festival dedicated to Hindu god Shiva. Unlike any other festivals that are celebrated at daylight only, Shivaratri is celebrated both day and night. Lord Shiva, the destroyer of evil, is worshipped at day and at night big bonfire is lighted outside the temple and people stand around the fire and rejoice the festival.

Offerings of special leaves ’Beal’ along with milk, sweets and fruits are made to God and a whole day of fasting is observed. In Shiva temples ‘Om Namah Shivaya’, the sacred mantra of Shiva is enchanted all day long.

Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu holds more than 400K pilgrimage alone on this auspicious occasion. Hindus from all around the world come here to pay their homage on the day of Shivaratri.

A huge number of Sadhus and naked Nagas smoking marijuana across the temple is a very common site in Pashupatinath temple on this day.
